In our efforts, as council, to ensure all residents are made aware and are prepared in the case of an evacuation for our town, we wish to provide the following information:
As you are aware, our area is in a state of emergency by the provincial government which extends from Bay de Verde to Whiteway.
Please pay close attention and follow all government updates and be prepared to evacuate at short notice if necessary.
If there is any that would need assistance during an evacuation, please contact the Town Hall by calling (709) 583-2010 or email clerk@winterton.ca, you may also contact any member of council. We ask that you do this as soon as possible so we have a record on file to utilize if the need arises.
When evacuating, due to a fire, it is crucial to pack essential items to ensure safety and comfort for at least a few days. Council encourages everyone to be prepared, do not wait until it is too late.
Some important items include the following:
- three-day supply of non-perishable food and water
- medications
- cash
- identification documents
- first aid kit
- clothing
- any personal/important documents
- flashlight
- portable radio
- chargers for phones or anything that requires charging
- for those with animals, don’t forget pet supplies
If you are evacuated during a wildfire:
Stay calm and follow all directions from emergency personnel, police and ground search and rescue.
Follow designated evacuation routes.
Report to the designated reception centre and register yourself, plus any family members or others who have evacuated with you – even if you plan to stay in an alternate location. This is essential as it allows officials to confirm that you have safely evacuated.
Registration with the Canadian Red Cross ensures that people can be contacted while away from home, and can be reached with information and assistance on further services that may be available during the time of need.
Advise friends and family that you are safe and update them on your whereabouts.
Monitor official guidance from authorities, like Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, and emergency services.
Do not attempt to return to your home. Remain outside the evacuation zone until the evacuation order is lifted, and authorities have advised that it is safe to return.
It is understandable that people are anxious and concerned over the current situation, however please be assured that your council members and staff are here to provide as much information as they can. You can also reach out to the following for further assistance if you feel the need:
